That raises a more important question for students and young professionals: if companies are changing how work is structured, what should you actually be preparing for?

Two recent perspectives help sharpen the answer. One comes from MIT, as reported by Fortune and Axios. The other comes from a Yale economist, also discussed by Fortune. Read together, they point to a shift that is easy to miss but increasingly hard to ignore.

AI Isn't Just Changing Jobs. It's Sorting Work.

The MIT research suggests that AI can already complete a large share of common written tasks at a minimally sufficient level. In plain terms, that means work that is acceptable, though not exceptional, with humans still needed for oversight and refinement. The estimate reported is that 65% of written tasks could be performed by AI at that level as of last year, with that number potentially rising to 80% to 95% by 2029.

The Yale perspective makes a different but complementary point: most jobs will not be fully automated all at once. Not only because AI may still have limits, but because much of the work people do is not valuable enough to justify the investment needed to automate it fully.

Put together, those views reshape the conversation. AI is not simply replacing entire jobs in one sweep. It is sorting work into categories:

The Yale perspective adds a second layer. Even if AI continues to improve, companies will not deploy it evenly. They invest where improving speed, quality, or scale creates real returns. Some work will remain untouched, not because it is difficult, but because it does not merit the investment.

The risk for students is not only replacement. It is also spending years preparing for work that AI can already do adequately, or work that organizations do not value enough to prioritize.

That is the deeper shift behind headlines like Oracle's latest layoffs. The labor market is not just changing. The definition of valuable work is narrowing.
